The Case

Leading grocery store chain across Canada was looking to electrify 5 of their locations by installing EV fast chargers as well a 5G tower to provide better amenities and experience for their customers. Jule facilitated the deployment at each location, which included 4 fast (150 kW) chargers and a 540 kWh Battery Energy Storage System (BESS). Shoppers are now able to charge their EVs while getting their groceries, the batteries are also peak shaving the stores’ utility bills and providing back-up power in case of outages. In such events, the BESS keeps the grocery stores and the 5G tower running, while also continually allowing drivers to charge their vehicles. The project aims at showcasing the effectiveness of such an electrification solution based on its ability to yield positive ROI faster than traditional direct-to-grid deployments while also providing increased resiliency. Additionally, all deployments are ready for future solar integration.

Problem

Sites only had between 30–50 kW of available grid input and high utility bills from energy consumption and demand charges. Amenities could not be installed without significant infrastructure upgrade costs, delays and added operational costs.

Solution

Jules’s 540 kWh BESS trickle charges from the available grid input and redistributes the power into its four 150 kW DC fast chargers (600 kW total) when they are in use. As a result, the BESS mitigates additional demand charges that would otherwise come from traditional direct-to-grid connections from the DC fast chargers. Furthermore, the battery is able to peak shave the grocery stores’ high energy consumption during maximum peak-loads coming from refrigeration and air conditioning. This has allowed the grocery store to save up to $100,000 on their utility bill annually.

Why Jule?

Jule has an all-in-one solution that comes pre-built from the factory for fast and easy deployment that also has a frictionless payment system, allowing shoppers to pay directly through a credit card reader. Jule’s Energy Management Software (EMS) also allows for BESS component health monitoring, enabling site hosts to address issues in advance without delays on diagnostics, maximizing uptime.
